Carten Controls
Carten is a prominent industry leader, specialising in the development, production, and distribution of ultra-high purity (UHP) and high-performance components and equipment for the semiconductor and biotechnology sectors on a global scale. In recognition of Carten’s outstanding performance, Carten was awarded the “Business of the Year (100+ employees)” and “Overall Business of the Year” at the Waterford Chambers Business Awards in 2023. This commendation emphasises Carten’s commitment to excellence and innovation, further solidifying its position as a leading force in the industry.
Originally founded by Dan Carten in 1970 in Connecticut, USA, Carten expanded with the construction of the Waterford, Ireland site in 1981, and is based at Unit 613 in the Waterford Industrial Park, in addition to its manufacturing site at Unit 609. Traditionally the US site has been the larger unit, with the Waterford site originally reporting back to the US. In recent years, however, Carten Waterford has overtaken the US site in terms of manufacturing output and new product developments. Carten was eventually bought by the current owners – Fujikin Incorporated (Japan) in 1991.
In high technology industries such as semiconductor – where microchips are manufactured for all our modern needs – and bioprocessing – where new cutting-edge drugs such as vaccines are manufactured, it is essential to continuously provide a new product development pipeline to ensure the continued success of both, a company brand, and the manufacturing site itself.
In the Waterford site, we have developed patented technologies for key markets such as bioprocessing, and developed new applications in our core semiconductor markets. The development of products for these industries require years to develop and validate and require huge investment in terms of finance – but critically, the human resources required across multiple disciplines and skillsets.
We developed one solution in the bioprocessing industry where we reduced our customers drug production downtime by 75% through a modification to our own product. In another case, we will modify our manufacturing application in producing our product to allow our customer to reduce contamination risk when transporting ultra-high purity gases into their chip-manufacturing facility.
